About Thatch Characteristics
What is the difference between African and Balinese type thatches?African thatch is called cape reed is is a strong straw like thatch, where as the Balinese thatch is indonesian Alang Alang which looks more like rasor grass. Thatch roofs are 5-10 degrees cooler than other forms of shade.
How effective is the waterproofing for both types of thatch?African cape reed is 99% waterproof, whereas the Balinese thatch is 100% waterproof due to the the density of many layers of thatch.
What is the lifetime of thatch?Depending on local climate condition as well as other adverse impact (trees, animals) the lifetime ranges between 6-15 years.
Will the colour remain the same as new thatch? No, as with any natural products the colours will change after the influence of water, sun etc. into a more wheathered natural appearance.
How much can pests and bushfire be a risk? When thatch material is imported into Australia a treatment is compulsary. In relation to fire risk, untreated thatch material burns similar to any timber. The risk of bushfire needs to be assessed individually for each site.

How long does it take to set-up the thatch Gazebo/ Pavilion?Varying on site condition between 1-2 days. The African thatches are easier to construct as the thatch material comes in tiles 80 cm wide.
How easy is it to set-up for a DIY handyman? For a handyman the African thatches are reasonably easy to set up. The Balinese thatches do require more skills to construct them in a satisfactory fashion.
Is council approval required? This very much depends on your council, please check directly for the required size. Most council only require an approval above a certain size.
How are they delivered? For the delivery to your home usually one person is required to take receipt of the shipment and help unloading. The kits consist of a frame structure (steel for African) and the thatch material.
What is the usual delivery time from day of order?Approximately 10-15 working days.
